Hon. Galmo and Althea Williams
Hon. Galmo and Althea Williams founded the TCAAF on World AIDS Day in 2003 with other concerned citizens who wanted to take proactive measures to raise awareness, compassion and consciousness for HIV/AIDS within the community of the Turks and Caicos Islands. Affectionately known as “Gilley” to his family and friends, Hon. Williams’ first passion was the culinary arts. With the help of close family, he was able to pursue this dream when he went to school overseas. Around this same time, Althea (his future wife), a proud and strong woman, worked as an administrative assistant for Johnston International Ltd. The two began a relationship and told the other of their dreams.
Gilley dreamt of opening his own restaurant and Althea aspired to launch a travel agency/property management service. With such ambition, it wasn’t long before each fulfilled their goals. Over the years, both businesses bloomed and flourished and expanded to what is now known as Gilley’s Enterprises Ltd. With such good fortune bestowed upon them, Gilley & Althea felt very strongly about giving back to the community that supported their dreams. Around this same time, the HIV/AIDS epidemic was beginning to greatly affect the lives of Turks & Caicos Islanders and hit home for the Williams’ when Gilley’s brother was diagnosed with the deadly virus. After watching the deterioration of their beloved brother, Gilley & Althea vowed to bring awareness and/or aid to other families about this terrible disease. Along with other key members, Gilley & Althea created the Turks & Caicos Aids Awareness Foundation (TCAAF) with Hon. Williams as its Patron & Chairman. To the Williams’, the TCAAF is hope that fewer families would have to suffer a loss as they did.
Terry Drummey
Terry Drummey, originally from Seattle, has lived in the Turks & Caicos for 18 years. He owns and manages Hemingway’s, a popular restaurant on the beach in Grace Bay. Terry is not only a founding member of the Foundation but also the organizer of the annual fund-raising golf tournament, The Jadot Cup. The Jadot cup is one of the most anticipated golfing events of the year and raises large amounts of money for TCAAF projects. Terry Drummey is also the Chairman for the Edward Gartland Youth Centre and has served in that post since the Youth Centre opened its doors in 2008. Terry works tirelessly to ensure the smooth operation of the Youth Centre so that the youth can have the best experience possible.
Michele M Shoulak (Micky)
Micky S Born in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada Micky first visited the Turks and Caicos Islands in 1982. She moved permanently to the island of Providenciales in 1983 and opened a hair salon, which she operates successfully today. She was granted Belongership-Citizenship in the Turks and Caicos Island in 1992. Micky has two daughters, Danielle and Jerrika, both of whom were born in the Turks and Caicos Islands. She lives on the island of Providenciales and enjoys the company of Danielle’s two children Jenelle and Elijah.
Micky was one of the original catalysts behind the building of Our Lady of Divine Providence Catholic Church, of which she is an active member. She has been active in her daughters’ schools, participating in fundraisers and has been a member of the PTA. She continues her participation to see the continuance of the best education possible for children in Turks and Caicos.
Micky was a Charter member of the Rotary Club of Providenciales, one of two business women on Providenciales invited to do so. She held the posts as Secretary, Treasurer and President 1999-2000. She further served Rotary as Assistant to the District Governor’s from 2002-2005 of District 7020 representing the Turks and Caicos Islands. Micky travelled throughout the Caribbean as an Ambassador of the Rotary Club of Providenciales and Rotary District 7020.
In 1995 Micky lost her brother and best friend to AIDS at the young age of 35 years. In 2000 she was approached by Gilley Williams, who had recently lost his brother, Beefer, to the same disease. Gilley along with Armin Thiele, another long time expatriate-Belonger, asked Micky to assist in forming a group, which became known as the Turks and Caicos AIDS Awareness Foundation (TCAAF). Along with other like minded citizens, she has been a valuable voice and fundraiser for the education in the prevention and spread of HIV/AIDS in the community where she lives and the country as a whole. Micky is highly organized in her efforts, with many successful events being held under her and others’ stewardship.
Micky has seen many changes in the Country over the years, but she still enjoys the solitude and beauty of Providenciales and the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Jeanne Savory
Jeannie was born in New Zealand but came with her parents to Turks & Caicos as a baby in 1981 and was granted Belonger status in 1992. She was educated in the UK and New Zealand, and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology & Anthropology and a Postgraduate Diploma in Law.
Currently working as a lawyer, Jeannie has previously worked for the Turks & Caicos Government National AIDS Programme as its Junior Programme Officer.
Jeannie worked for the TCAAF as their administrator from 2006 until 2008 when she went to London to complete her studies. Upon her return to the Islands in 2009 she was invited to join the TCAAF as a Director. She serves as the Foundation’s Secretary and is a past President.
Dr Euan Menzies MBBS (London) MRCP (UK)
Dr. Menzies became a Board Member for the Turks and Caicos AIDS Awareness Foundation in 2015.
Dr. Dawn O’Sullivan
Dr. Dawn O’Sullivan is a Founding Member and Director of the TCAAF. She has been involved in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of HIV in the Turks & Caicos since 1999 and was granted Belonger status in recognition of her contributions in the field.
In recent years Dawn has been living in the Channel Islands and working as an Accident & Emergency doctor, she has previously served on the Government Turks & Caicos National AIDS Programme Committee and as the Programme’s Clinical Coordinator and then as Deputy Chief of Medicine at the Cheshire Hall Medical Centre in Providenciales. She has also worked as a GP at Associated Medical Practices. Her expertise in the field of HIV/AIDS, as well as her enthusiasm and dedication to the cause, have been essential to the Foundation’s efforts.
Dawn is a past President and former co-host of monthly TCAAF TV show which focused on HIV prevention and is currently working with Associated Medical Practices as a GP in the Turks & Caicos.
